"Being where we are, and who we are, we must be the East of the West, and the West of the East", St Sava said that for Serbia of that time, this is true and even nowadays, especially for Pirot, the city which connects the East to the West, and vice versus. Actually, this town had been marked on the old Roman maps from the 2 nd century B.C., as Mutatio Tures ; the Greeks called it Pirgos and the Serbs named it Pirot in the 14 th century, and it remained ever since.
Having been located as it is, Pirot was always a transit town, a place where many cultures and nationalities meet; heading either way, this is the gate that must be passed through.
Geographical location of the municipality: The municipality of Pirot is in the South-eastern Serbia, and it is bordered with the municipalities of Dimitrovgrad, Babušnica, Bela Palanka and Knjaževac and the Republic of Bulgaria on 65 km long border line.
Surounding mountains: Stara Planina, Belava, Vlaška Planina, Vidlič.
Rivers and lakes: Nišava, Jerma, Rasnička reka, Gradašnička reka, Visočica, Jelovička reka, Toplodolska reka, Zavojsko jezero.
Climate: moderate continental.

Important highway roads: the intercontinental highway road, the Euro highway road E-70, Niš-Dimitrovgrad highway M-1-12, 36 km of it passing through the municipality of Pirot; Pirot Babušnica road M-9, 11 km of it passing through the municipality itself.
